POGGENSEE’S POSTCARDS: Amish threshers reminded us recently that harvest time nears

HAZLETON, Iowa, Sept. 11, 2014 — It’s harvest time in Iowa again, or it will be as soon as it quits raining and fields can dry.  We got a reminder recently that it would soon be time to combine soybeans and pick corn when photographer Don Poggensee reported from here in northeast Iowa that Amish farmers were joining together to thresh oats.  Their equipment and methods may look old, but they still work well — and so do the farmers themselves as they do a whole lot of physical labor.  Now, we pray for a bountiful harvest, and for fair prices, and most of all, we pray for the safety of all farmers and those who work in support of them.
